Advertising: Key conventions

Part 1: Skittles advert analysis

1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.
  • Image - The Skittles picture is spread out like a rainbow, making us feel happy and joyful about the brand. By putting the product packaging in the middle, it makes us think of Skittles as something fun and exciting.
  • Logo - The logo is in the middle with colors around it. It makes us think about all the different flavors Skittles has.
  • Background - The background looks like the sky with a Skittles rainbow. This makes us think Skittles isn't just sweet, it's like something natural and enjoyable, giving us a special feeling.
  • Slogan - "Taste the rainbow" tells us each Skittles flavor is different and fun, reinforcing that the ad wants us to have a joyful experience.
  • Color Scheme - Using all the colors of the rainbow creates a clear brand identity. It helps us recognize Skittles easily because the colors match the product.

2) What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of persuasive techniques listed above?
Look at the Maltesers example above if you are unsure how to complete these tasks.
- The USP of Skittles is the slogan "taste the rainbow" as you cannot actully taste a rainbow and its very well known meaning if referenced elsewhere you would easily recognise it.

Part 2: Advert research

} Use Google images to research classic adverts. Find examples for the following and add them to your blog:

1) An advert with a clear brand identity

2) An advert that uses shock tactics or a controversial idea

3) An advert that creates a a strong emotional connection to the audience
