The producer of this advert uses the text that says "dig toilets not graves" next to a child wearing an old blue top sitting on a chair next to a mud wall. "Dig toilets not graves" conveys that the community that this boy lives in has poor sanitation and no clean water nor toilets, the mud wall and dirt streets gives the Consumer the impression that the community does not have enough money to buy concrete walls, further more one can infer that this advert takes place in a developing country. The Water aid advert makes the audience feel empathetic towards the people affected by having no clean water/toilets. 1) What year was the advert produced? - This advert was from 1955 2) How were women represented in most adverts in the 1950s? Add as much detail to this answer as you can as these are the social, cultural and historical contexts we will need to write about in the exam. - In 1955, British society was still adjusting after World War Two in which women took on many traditionally male jobs with men off fighting. Mise-en-scéne

The character shown in the image above is wearing a dressing gown, hospital style and a cap of wires on her head. This suggests that she's being tested on and perhaps staying at a facility/hospital by her gown. This is reinforced by the high-key and dull-greyish lighting which you may usually find in a hospital or sanctuary. By her stance and expression she's showing a concentrated and focus in her body language with her hands on the table, looking at the Coca-Cola can which is being crushed. As to her focused staring at the can, we can infer that she is the one crushing the can. The directors use make-up to emphasise her tiredness by using eye bags and she is stuck at the facility with shaving her head. In this shot you can see the use of cans, a fridge, chair and table as props and the setting is a bland, white walled room that gives off an unsettling and somewhat scary feeling as to a hospital.
